The story

DI Ben Kitto needs a second chance. After ten years in the Met’s murder investigation team, his work partner’s suicide has left him grief-stricken, and in charge of her wayward dog, Shadow. Kitto returns to the tiny Scilly island of Bryher where he was born, hoping for rest and relaxation, but his plans go awry when the body of sixteen year old Laura Trescothick is found at Hell Bay. Kitto volunteers to run the investigation but soon the maimed body of Laura’s boyfriend washes up on the ghostly uninhabited island of Samson, and he must close the case before another teenager is killed. The story

When the body of professional diver Jude Trellon is found in Piper’s Hole, it seems that the young mother’s death was a tragic accident, but Kitto discovers that she was choked to death with a metal figurine, dating from Roman times. Kitto realizes that she could have been killed for failing to reveal the location of a Roman shipwreck called the Minerva, reputed to be loaded with ancient treasures. The killer is leaving cryptic messages in bottles, taunting the police for failing to track him down, and Kitto must risk his life in a terrifying hunt at sea before the case can be resolved.

Someone is attacking incomers to the island, and leaving clues written in ancient Cornish. The medium of fire is being used to remove every trace of evidence from each crime scene. Kitto must do battle with a smart and highly organised killer, before more visitors to St Agnes lose their lives.
